A medium-sized town is in an uproar. Just a moment ago, politicians and residents alike believed they were on the rise. The economy was set to be boosted by a new spa. They expected streams of tourists and spa guests, and with them, large income for the town coffers. But then Dr. Stockmann speaks up with a new report. It states clearly and unmistakably that the groundwater is contaminated by the wastewater from an industrial plant.
An Enemy of the People is arguably Henrik Ibsen’s most political drama. Against the backdrop of an environmental scandal, it explores how democratic opinion-forming works - or how it can go wrong.
